The Society of Law Accountants in Scotland

Supporting, educating, and advancing legal finance professionals across Scotland

The Society of Law Accountants in Scotland (SOLAS) exists to support and promote the work of legal accounting professionals across the country. As the recognised body for those working within the financial operations of Scottish law firms, our aim is to foster excellence, encourage continuous development, and help build a strong, knowledgeable community within the profession.

Whether you work in a legal practice, operate in the wider legal services sector, or are simply interested in the field, this website offers an introduction to who we are, what we do, and how you can engage with the Society.

Objectives

SOLAS is founded on a commitment to education, collaboration, and professional growth. Our objectives, as set out in our Memorandum and Articles of Association, focus on bringing people together to exchange ideas, share experience, and explore best practice in legal accounting.

We hold regular branch meetings across Scotland, providing opportunities for members to hear from guest speakers, take part in discussions, and connect with colleagues from other firms. To further support professional development, SOLAS also runs a structured Evening Course designed to help individuals build confidence and competence in all areas of law accounting.

History of SOLAS

The Society has a long and established history within the Scottish legal sector. Originally founded in 1910 in Aberdeen, SOLAS grew steadily until the First World War interrupted its activities. A decline in membership during that period ultimately led to the Society being allowed to lapse in 1924. However, renewed enthusiasm in 1953 brought SOLAS back to life, beginning again in Aberdeen, followed by the establishment of a Glasgow branch in 1958. Branches in Edinburgh and Dundee soon followed, and although the Dundee branch was inactive for a time, it was successfully re‑established in 1988.

Classes began in Inverness in 1991, culminating in the formation of an Inverness branch in 1993. Today, SOLAS continues to build on this strong foundation, remaining dedicated to supporting and advancing the profession across Scotland.
